The Brighton skate scene was really popping in the late 2000s, with filmers like James Cheetham, Drew Mardsen, Liam Teague, Ed Hubert and Sirus F Gahan being the most productive and prolific in the area at the time. Entering the early 2010s, Ed Hubert’s video ‘LIKE’ came out in 2012. After that it seemed to be Sirus F Gahan that was holding it down with a few short edits and one of my personal favourites, ‘death æsthetic’, which came out at the start of 2016.
There was a gap for a few years before Zane Crowther came onto the filming scene with his ‘Subliminal Sleep’ video in 2018, but shortly after the release he moved up north to his home town in Manchester. Al Hodgson reignited the scene with his video ‘CIRCADIAN’, released near the end of 2018, and has continued to do so to this very day. But, with Al recently busy working on other new projects, I took it upon myself to buy a VX and start a Brighton scene project of my own.
I’ve always been amazed and inspired by filming in skate videos as I am a huge skatenerd. I’ve been blessed to have been taught how to use the VX by the wizard himself,Al Hodgson. I can safely say that making this video has been very easy as I’ve been surrounded by such talented and lovely people. It’s been a huge privilege working with these fine gentlemen and I’ll continue to do so once this video is done. I feel like Brighton is thankfully in a place now where it’s just as productive and prolific with skate videos as it was back in the late 2000s when it was at its most exciting.
Huge thanks to Luke George and Reece Leung for coming down to shoot the photos and Vague Skate Mag for hosting the video and article. This is my first Brighton full length using the VX, I hope you enjoy the video. This is ‘HEADZ’.
