Welcome to the cyber promotion of our 53rd printed issue. Tonnes in this this one to get your metaphorical teeth into. As you can see from the appropriate imagery, Lilly Strachan takes the cover with an eggplant shot by Jonathan Patterson to compliment the nautical artwork of Vaughan Baker. Needless to say we’re extremely happy with all of these components individually and combined.
Staying on the coastal theme we have an interview with Cal Dawson, who has made his mark on a multitude of Brighton terrain since moving there, conducted by a man who continues to do so much for us and the Brighton scene, Mr Al Hodgson. Skate stunts are captured very, very nicely indeed by Luke George and the hardest working man this side of the sun, the moon and the Holy Ghost Reece Leung (he didn’t write this by the way). Big fan of Cal and his craft, thank you so much for being a part of the issue mate!
Our own personal creme de la creme of the written word Jono Coote gives his two cents on CHPO‘s most excellent documentary ‘I’ve Been Doing This A Long Time’, directed by Viktor Telégin and Markus Bengtsson and starring mag fave Helena Long. A great project we’re honoured to have in this issue. Imagery comes from the doc itself, Jenna Selby and Rafal Wojnowski, and is all class if we do say so ourselves.
Not one to shy away from the written interview, Jono gets a cracking back and forth going with his Down Under pal, aficionado of the DIY and a man who has an overdraft full of creativity, Cameron Markin. Photos come courtesy of Jose Parra Candia, Jack Patterson, Dean James, Junji Murata & Tim Ford, who all did fantastic jobs. Anyone who is unfamiliar with Cameron’s skating is in for a treat, we’re huge fans and it’s always highly considered and rad as fuck.
Staying in that hemisphere, Sam Coady interviews Liv (laugh) Lovelace. We’re beyond stoked to get Liv in this one, she’s been on our radar a while and her output is incredible. Sam, not content with just interviewing Livm also gets some lovely snaps alongside some other very lovely photos from Chris Dale and Gerard Riera.
Mike O’Meally keeps the Australian motif going and simply gave us no option but to run a spiffing Thames article documenting a trip to Australia titled The Boy, The Bat & His Godfather. Great aesthetics, great skating, great photography, great text. Some would say these components are ideal to be featured in a magazine and we’d whole heartedly agree with them.
Now onto the art side, Vaughan Baker brings modesty and style to his interview showcasing his incredible paintings for you, the often undeserving public (not all of you of course). Vaughan discusses his artistic journey, the characters that feature in his work and which creative luminary hypothetically may have a banging nollie backside kickflip.
Other artists that bring extra piz-azz to the pages include Chris Bourke, Tim Gresham, Alexander Donlon, Glen Fox & Gregory Herbert. Thanks to all of these masters of visual stimuli.
We have loads of top banana skateboarders and photographers in our photo gallery segment. As you may have come to notice over the last 50 plus issues, we do this on purpose!
Finishing off the issue is one of the features that we are most proud of and are continuously thankful to have, it’s Skate Shop Quotes by Dave Tyson.
