One of the reasons we’re so happy to see Dan succeed and travel is not just the documented tricks he puts down (in a unique and inspiring way) but to see the impact he has on the scenes he visits. So many people fully backing him and only having positive things to say about him. It certainly makes English people seem less horrendous at least. I didn’t necessarily trust his beautiful smile at first, I thought he must be a villain, but no he is genuinely that nice. We’re privileged to have Dan in this magazine and for his second interview we thought we’d approach it more as a top 3 affair. Thanks as always Dan.

Top 3 clips you’re most stoked on for this project and why?

I’ve always wanted to do a Dale Starkie line at Henry Moore, so that clip is defo one of my favourites.

The switch sugarcane at the Whippy Quarters is another one. Maybe we did that the day before the Henry Moore line, a good weekend haha.

Lastly, I’d say the switch back smith in Bordeaux. I think the spot looks really nice, I always thought he kind of looks like a samurai. The photo is one of my favourites too. Thanks Reece!

Top 3 favourite Brighton/Sussex ‘spots’ and why?

Sainsbury’s ledge in Brighton. The floor is a little bobbly but this angle-iron wall ledge both looks and skates amazing. Sadly you can only skate on Sundays after Sainsbury’s closes, so winter is a write-off.

The 5 flat 5 opposite Preston Park. The spot is beautiful, red brick with trees hanging over it. Unfortunately it’s also a Sunday only spot.

They’re a lot harder to skate than they look, but Bottle Alley banks in Hastings are great. You’ve got to work hard for tricks but it’s super satisfying if you make anything. It’s also nice that you’re pretty much on the beach as you skate ‘em.

Top 3 British cities to skate (and why)?

London is my favourite, it has been ever since I used to get the train up from Brighton as a kid for day trips. Everything you film here looks amazing, from the red post and telephone boxes to marble benches and the classic Portland stone architecture of places like Bank, St Paul’s and Parliament Square. This, alongside the history; watching an old Blueprint video then skating around the city centre is a pretty special feeling.

Leeds is pretty damn good too, although I’m sad to see L ledge go. A lot of good spots and good people in Leeds.

For my final pick I have to say Brighton. Although I often find it really hard to film at our spots, for me growing up here skating and watching local scene videos means that whatever I do manage to film or do here is important to me.

Top 3 reasons why you love shorts so much?

The freedom.

A summer breeze.

A good shinner.

Top 3 reasons to wear ankle socks?

An honest mistake.

Quarter-life crisis.

Shorts getting longer.

Top 3 360s (BS, Nollie FS, etc)?

Switch back 360

Nollie front 360

Front 360

Top 3 most illegal tricks you’ve done?

Haha… Is fakie smith to fakie nosegrind illegal these days?

I had an ollie late body varial era. I even did a kickflip one once.

Maybe the most illegal was nollie 360 inward.

Top 3 reasons to skate a shaped board?

Impossible to miss board on landing.

Weight training.

Looks cool.

Top 3 Crailtap board graphics?

At the 30 Years of Chocolate event there was a Paulo Diaz Shark graphic, I think pencil drawn. That could honestly be my favourite graphic ever.

Next up, the classic Chocolate Chunk. They make one at the moment called the Scrunk which is kinda like a half Chunk. That one is cool as they have half the deck wood stain. I really like seeing the grain of the wood on a board.

For number 3, definitely the Girl OG 93. There’s something special about that one. So much history. A heritage graphic haha.

Top 3 most patient filmers?

Al Hodgson. That man is a hero. Damn, he filmed me in -0° temperatures over a period of 4 days, I think it was 961 tries… Considering it was a line and that I only landed just over 20 of the first trick in that entire time, that’s some pretty ridiculous patience.

After Al, I’ve gotta shout out Luca Spezzatura. This year we’ve filmed at the same spot maybe 10 different days, with only 1 sketchy make to show for it… And he still wants to film with me? Haha.

To be honest I can’t really limit this to 3 as there are so many people I’m so grateful for. I think anyone who I’ve ever filmed with deserves a special mention… Off the top of my head, shout outs to Moritz Mauch, Lucci, and Daniel Policelli. To Quentin, Jude Harrison and Harrison Woolgar, who’ve all helped film this. To the Twins (Mike and Will Boardman) who both have superhuman patience as long as we can go to the pub afterwards… Love and thanks to you all.

Top 3 worst clip meltdowns?

Shiii sorry Al. Number 1 gotta be our line we filmed at Sussex Uni (the one I just talked about). After missing maybe my 100th switch backside flip in a row for the 4th or 5th time I lost all belief in myself. Thanks for believing in me Al.

Honestly I think Al has experienced the worst of my meltdowns. Another we had was an ollie in Brighton. The stairs were super skinny so I thought that if I kicked out I’d probably land back on my board in an awkward way. I find it pretty scary when I can’t see a way out. Being dumb I then proceeded to kick out haha… Smashing Clém Le Gall’s flash in the process. Sorry Clém.

I had one with Quentin we called the freak spin. I think that was 2020. We went a couple times to try and for some reason I just couldn’t commit to it. I lost my mind a few times during that. That’s how it got its name.

Top 3 bougiest meals on a skate trip?

adidas Skateboarding did a trip to Paris during Fashion Week. All the food we had that week was great. Everything in Paris feels bougie tbh. There was an evening meal we had near Notre Dame with half of the squad. My first time trying escargot. Thank you Jessie Van Roechoudt for that one.

I gotta thank adidas as damn we’ve had some good meals. I remember having some really good food in Stuttgart one time. I can’t remember the name of the place but I do remember being surprised by how good the German cuisine is.

Then recently with Chocolate in Sicily we went to an Osteria in Messina. A family owned restaurant. Maybe not classed as bougie, but definitely one of the nicest experiences.

Top 3 benefits to being interviewed twice in the same mag?

I get to speak to you more.

I get to hang out with Reece more.

I get to hang out with Vinnie more.

Top 3 Level lurkers?

Stevie G can rollerskate, backflip, freestyle and make jewellery out of cans. He’s a solid number 1.

The Joker (MIA).

Not sure of his name, but the 80s adidas tracksuit homie is legendary. You can see him all around Brighton with a boombox, and he owns just about every colourway of every adidas tracksuit ever made. Wow… I just typed in ‘adidas tracksuit guy Brighton’ and he came up. Shout out DJ Joshi Woshi.

Top 3 things you’ve seen a seagull nick from someone’s hand?

My mum actually got cut by a seagull as it stole her hard boiled egg a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t see it, but damn.

A Greggs sausage roll is a recurring one. I’ve seen and experienced this. Be careful on North Street.

I don’t have many more seagull experiences but recently a fox ate a good portion of mine and my dad’s walking shoes, which is kind of relevant?
